Is the Tech Coach just a technosnob?
In my opinion a technosnobe is someone who loves technology and the digital world. They tend to use computers and blackberries, and stay away from an analog lifestyle such as a rotary phone, paper brochures, etc.
While in St. Louis earlier this month, I was taken back by the lack of technology use at the hotel. Here’s the story:
I arrived at the hotel Thursday afternoon while a friend of mine arrived Thursday evening. When she was checking in the following happened:
friend – Do you have car service?
front desk staff – [blink] um…car service? We have taxi service, is that what you mean?
friend – well,…yes.
front desk staff – Yes let me get you a number.
Now you would figure the front desk to have a list of numbers for taxi services readily available. At least stick it on a post-it note by the comptuers. Since they didn’t have a list already made up, they had to look up a number. So, you would think, since the computer is already there and the hotel has wireless internet access, that they would look up taxi services on the web. Nope. They pulled out the Yellow Pages book, looked up a taxi service and wrote down the first number and handed it to my friend. She shook her head and called me when she got to her room. The reason we needed a taxi was to drive up to Whole Foods to get some healthy foods for the conference. I have a number of food intollerances and she eats VERY healthy!
friend – Sandra, I’m in my room. Come down so we can call the taxi and get ready to head to Whole Foods.
I ran down to her room. We called the number that front desk gave us but found that they wanted $20 to drive to Whole Foods. That was too high we thought. So I offered to call front desk to grab another taxi number and compare prices. Here’s how my phone call went with front desk
front desk staff – Front desk. How can I help?
me – Hi there, could you give me the number to a taxi company that isn’t County Cab?
front desk staff – sure. Could you hold on a minute?
me - Yes of course.
They put down the phone and I could hear the front desk staff’s conversation. Two minutes later she came back to me
front desk staff – Um Ma’am?
me – Yes?
front desk staff – Someone seems to have stollen my Yellow Pages.
me – [gasp] [bitting my lip so I wouldn't laugh out loud]
front desk staff – But if you look in your closet there are 2 yellow pages books in there.
me – [trying to talk ask quickly as possible so I could hang up and laugh] oh ok! Thanks….bye
So as you can see it was regular practise to look up numbers in the Yellow Pages as opposed to the internet or have a list ready to go when someone required a taxi! And just a side note…we were right by the airport, not downtown. If we were downtown I could see why we wouldn’t need a taxi as I’m sure (or guessing) that everything we needed would be within walking distance.
I myself have used www.yellowpages.com or www.yellowpages.ca but I think the last time I used the Yellow Pages book was when I needed a boost at the hair dressers!
So am I a technosnob? Would you have the same or similiar reaction?
