The Importance of Buying Your Own Name’s Domain

If you haven’t already purchased www.YourNameHere.com I suggest you do.

Here’s why:

Being solo-preneurs our reputation is part of our brand.  So why not protect yourself, your business and your brand by purchasing your name’s domain name?  You do not even have to publish a website for it.  Just purchase it so that no one else can do something with it.  Alternatively you may publish a single webpage with all of your web addresses on it.  This way, if someone is looking for you, they not only find you but they find links to your websites, blogs, affiliate programs etc.  I will be doing exactly this by the end of the summer and will keep you posted.

Did you know that ThreesCompany.com was not originally owned by the hit 70’s television show?  It is one of my all-time favourite television shows and when I first went to the site I did not see anything about crazy comedy, instead you can only imagine what the website was about (eww!).

Did you know that BruceSpringsteen.com is not owned by “The Boss” himself?  In fact a fan purchased it and Mr. Springsteen tried to take him to court to win “his” domain name.  He lost the court case as he is not entitled to the domain name, no matter who he is.  Luckily the owner of BruceSpringsteen.com is a big fan and not someone who is trying to ruin Mr. Springsteen’s reputation.

What if the .com is already taken?

Turns out there’s a real estate person with my name who has the .com

    Hi Marcia,

bummer! At least you know they will be using the site name for good!

    You can:
    1) purchase the domain with a hyphen in it your-name.com
    2) purchase the domain name with your middle initial in it
    3) find out when they domain name expires. I search the domain name at http://www.internic.ca. Once you have done that click the “whois” button under .com to find out when it expires. If they don’t renew it you can purchase it (sometimes it takes 42 days for this to clear out of their account before you can buy it).

    I hope that helps.
