Week 4 day 2: When Product days are unproductive

What a day!

While I was trying to write my newsletter this morning, I had a few important family calls come through.  While on the calls one dog got sick and the other dog decided it was a good time to misbehave!  I finally got everything out of control and got my newsletter out 2 hours later than usual.

I try not to schedule calls during my “week of products”.  The reason why I do not schedule calls during these weeks is because it is a distraction. Although the calls may only be scheduled for an hour (or even less), you still lose the few minutes before the call because you are preparing for the call or you don’t have enough time to start working on something new.  Once the call is over, is it really over?  You may spend the next 15 minutes sending out an email that was requested during the call and while you are sending that email out why not reply to the emails that came in?  Then you may decided to visit that website that was mentioned on the call.  Before you know it, it’s been 1.5+ hours since you last did any work on your products.

So what happened to me yesterday?  I had 45 minutes between sending my newsletter and getting on a scheduled monthly meeting with my mastermind group.  In that 45 minutes, I walked the dogs, made lunch, made a coffee, ate and got on the call.  Luckily I was one of the first ones on and I was able to run back into the kitchen and get my coffee.  After the call, I had to send out some emails to the group and saw an email from Andrea Lee regarding a project we’ve been working on.  In her e-mail she wrote:

“Are you okay with me sending a few little things over for our project today? or should i wait till next week? not joking, i’m being serious!”

How can I say no to Andrea Lee and to this awesome project centered around Coaching (I’ll reveal what it is in a future post).  I did tell my clients I would handle emergencies this week and so to me, when a project is this big and we are going live this week, it’s an emergency.  I took care of what was needed of me.

Speaking of emergencies I also took the sick dog to the vet and he’s fine now.  Before I knew it, it was 7pm and it was time for me to get ready for my soccer game.

So what did we learn?

  1. Do not schedule or take any calls during a product week.
  2. Do take care of your clients!
  3. Do expect things to throw you off your planned product week.  Just make sure to get back to your product week asap.

I’m getting back on the saddle now! I’ll let you know how it goes!

If you like this post, please consider buying me a coffee.
